SEO Roadmap

Keyword Discovery for SEO

Keyword discovery makes many small business owners or staff nervous due to its uncertain nature. After all, any word can be a keyword, right? Right! …and also wrong.  If you don’t carefully consider various words, phrases, and questions related to your business, your selected keywords may be worthless. Like many other things in life, the more time and effort you put into the discovery phase(s), the more you will get out of it. So how do you do it? How do you select the perfect keywords for your business? Trial and error are key while monitoring progress with standard tools from companies like UberSuggests, Ahrefs, and SEMRush. Unfortunately, monitoring tools are not cheap. We do have a list of paid and FREE tools for your perusal, but you certainly get what you pay for. Luckily, some programs come with free versions or trials so that you can test their value.

Free Tools:

  • Ubersuggests – The SEO and marketing guru, Neil Patel created a cheaper version of the industry standard suites of SEO tools. He even provides some functionality for free.
  • Google Autocompletion – You know exactly what this is. Type anything into a Google search bar and view suggestions based on popularity, location, and your general browsing history.
  • Answer the Public – A fairly unique service that suggests questions your audience of customers may ask in relation to keywords you provide. A fantastic resource for keyword phrases.

Keyword Themes

Follow your best customers on social media. Make them “Top Fans” of your pages if possible. It’s always a good idea to develop friendly relationships with customers who really care about your business, products, and services. Not only do they tend to be more vocal about your business on the internet, but they may even use keywords when they do! Use their experiences navigating your website to have a better understanding of your website’s traffic. Another useful method would be to use heatmaps, either paid or free tools like Microsoft Clarity.

Between your chosen keywords and business & customer knowledge, you can begin choosing a few or several themes for your website.

For example, a bookstore may have a theme for each webpage in its main navigation menu.

Google Autocomplete

Keyword Theme Examples

Books • Author Signings • Gifts • News • Stores

Ubersuggests offers questions like “Why are books better than movies?” or “Can books get moldy or deteriorate?” – perfect choices for a bookstore blog.

Google Autocompletion provided the most popular phrases searched on Google regarding author signings. Use them for headings, create a page for author news, send out newsletters, etc. with those particular keywords. They may just catch a click or two!

Website Architecture for SEO

With the examples above, can you make an educated guess on the next step? Those keyword theme examples above look very similar to a navigation menu, don’t they? Keyword themes represent different sections of your website. Understanding their purpose may even give you ideas for other keyword themes. Each page or section of pages on your website should have a theme representing them.

On their own, webpages are almost like their own separate website in some ways. Linking them internally, meaning within the website, will provide more ways for users to reach the amazing content you are about to create in the next step. Without being too spammy, the more links that you add, the more likely those pages will receive visitors. Keep in mind that not all pages are created equal. Determine which pages you want users to find. For example, it may be best not to spend too much time adding links to a privacy policy page. It’s important for that sort of information to be available, but it won’t provide your website with any sort of advantage.

  • Create the main navigation menu
  • Create a footer navigation menu
  • Insert links in images, paragraph text, and headings
  • Use blog articles like this one to push users to important pages. Here’s a good example 😉

Create & Optimize Content for SEO

We’re in the final stretch! Unfortunately, that final stretch never actually ends. Content creation is arguably the most time-consuming and crucial aspect of SEO with Backlinks not far behind. As you’ve likely noticed, it not only leads your customers to a specific location on your website but will also keep them there.

Write authentic, friendly content.

This is true whether you write blog articles for increased traffic or describe products and services on your “About Us” page. Always write for the reading level of your targeted audience. No one wants to read a dissertation.
